Reason 13 Review

Hey everyone, Evan here, and today I'm excited to share my thoughts on Reason 13 after spending the past few weeks with a review copy courtesy of Reason Studios. I've been a longtime user of Reason since version 2.5, and it's been a staple in my music production journey, with placements on TV and licensing deals under its belt. So, let's dive into whether Reason 13 is worth upgrading to, starting fresh with, or simply passing on.

Should You Upgrade or Start with Reason 13?

First off, it's important to consider how you plan to use Reason. If you see Reason as your primary DAW for recording, mixing, and composing, then Reason 13 is definitely a significant upgrade (if you want to support me AND get a free plugin, use this affiliate link to upgrade to Reason 13). The workflow improvements are noticeable and beneficial, making your music creation process smoother and more efficient. However, it's essential to note that Reason still lags behind more modern DAWs like Logic Pro or Ableton in terms of overall feature set and user experience. If you're new to music production and looking for your first DAW, I'd recommend exploring those alternatives first.

For current Reason users who are comfortable with its interface and functionality, upgrading to Reason 13 makes sense. The time-saving features alone, like the new instruments and utilities, justify the upgrade. These enhancements can shave off considerable time per project and reduce frustration levels. Despite these improvements, Reason 13 still has room to grow to match the capabilities of its competitors.

Reason 13 as a Plugin

If you primarily use Reason as a plugin within another DAW, the decision to upgrade to Reason 13 becomes a bit trickier. While the addition of new synths like PolyOne and a robust delay like Ripley are impressive, the $199 price tag might not be justified unless you're specifically looking to expand your sound palette with these new tools. Reason 13 does offer competitive value when compared to other plugin bundles like Native Instruments Komplete or Arturia V Collection, making it a viable option if you're looking for comprehensive sound libraries.

What's New in Reason 13?

Now, let's delve into some of the standout features of Reason 13!

PolyTone Synthesizer

One of the marquee additions is the PolyTone synthesizer, a dual-section retro-inspired synth with powerful morphing capabilities between its two oscillator sections. This allows for creating rich, vintage-inspired sounds that are both dynamic and expressive.

Ripley Delay

The Ripley delay stands out as one of the best in its class, offering unique features like freeze mode, integrated wobbler, and versatile routing options. It's a tool that can add depth and character to your mixes effortlessly.

Minor Effects Plugins

Reason 13 also adds 3 more minor effects plugins. First, there as a very useful, but boring gain tool that also works as a meter and pan/width control Next, there is the Stereo Tool which is really, really good at making mono sounds wide and wonderful. It also has a really cool frequency shift function that creates a sort of haas effect.

Finally, Reason 13 adds the incredible Sidechain plugin which is mind blowing. It's an incredible, workflow friendly sidechain tool. But it's also so much more than that. It's a powerful, flexible gating tool. It's an envelope shaper. And coolest of all, it offers the ability to only sidechain and gate certain frequencies creating entirely new sounds.

Workflow Enhancements

Reason 13 introduces significant workflow improvements, including an advanced browser with tag-based browsing for quicker access to sounds and effects. The mixer and sequencer enhancements, such as intelligent zoom and enhanced editing capabilities, further streamline the production process, making navigation and editing more intuitive.

Conclusion of Reason 13 Review

In conclusion, Reason 13 represents a notable step forward for longtime users of the platform, offering substantial workflow enhancements and new creative tools that enhance productivity and creativity. However, for newcomers to music production or those seeking the most cutting-edge features, there may be more suitable options available. Whether you choose to upgrade, start fresh, or continue using Reason as a plugin, the decision ultimately hinges on your specific needs and workflow preferences.

I hope this review has helped you gain insight into what Reason 13 has to offer. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. Are you planning to upgrade, or do you have questions about specific features? I'd love to hear from you!

From a Frustrated Producer in a Ragtag Bedroom Studio to Major Placements on TV Earning $1,000s!

My name is Evan, and I've been making music since around 3rd grade. I'm from San Diego, California, but I've lived in Washington, DC for the last 20 years.

After 3 grueling years of grad school, though I had put aside serious attempts at making music. I found myself spending my days doing work that was dreadfully uncreative, with a ton of student student loan debt.

Which made me feel like my favorite parts of myself were withering.

But I didn't know what to do about it.

Being in my early 30s with tons of student loan debt, in a world where there is "no money in music," I felt like my youthful dreams of trying to "make it big" were dead. Like my music would remain unheard in my head and hard drive.

Frustrated by my inability to get my music heard, I started researching solutions.

Instead, I wanted to find a way where I could focus on making the music and let someone else deal with promoting it.

I realized the music licensing was the perfect opportunity for a solo artist like me to get my music heard, without having to do any promotion. I just need to focus on improving what I could control - my songwriting and my production skills.

While I still have a full-time day job, I have created systems that have allowed me to produce dozens of songs a year in my spare time.

My songs have been on Netflix, TV shows like the 90 Day Fiance, an award-winning indie film, and NPR’s “All Thing Considered.” They've also been streamed millions of times.

In addition to being a music producer, I am passionate about teaching people how they can make professional-sounding music and earn money licensing it, all in their spare time.

Thousands of musicians, like yourself, have trusted me to guide their musical journey. My YouTube videos have been watched nearly a million times. And my story has been in Forbes, Side Hustle Nation, and the Side Hustle School.
